Experience Comes in Many Forms: Man takes 10 year hike on the Appalachian Trail

Experience Comes in Many Forms: Man takes 10 year hike on the Appalachian Trail

Professor completes lifelong dream, 10 year hike across the Appalachian Trail
By Hayley Wood

John Phillips occupies a small corner office on the fifth floor of the library, but his path in life has taken him far beyond these confines.

Pictures of hiking trails and souvenirs adorn the walls and various maps can be seen sticking out of books and folders.

Edmon Low Library professor and head of the documents department Phillips said he always had a love for the outdoors and spent most of his life in Oklahoma as a Boy Scout.

Phillips attended OSU to get a bachelor’s degree in history then the University of Oklahoma for his master’s degree in library science.

At OSU, Phillips said he picked up a book about the Appalachian Trail, “Edward Garvey’s Appalachian Hiker: Adventure of a Lifetime.” He became interested in repeating Garvey’s approximately 2,000 mile hike.

In the spirit of the season, SKI season: Skiing in the worlds flatest country!

Skiing in the world's flatest country!

Skiing in The Netherlands is not a concept that comes easily to mind. Surely most of the country is technically below sea level, and what's left is pretty flat? Surely this isn't a country famed for its snow? Ice skating on frozen canals perhaps, but no snow skiing.

Well Holland does have eight snow centres, but they're all indoors. It's quite a healthy tally for a country of less than five million people, only Japan has more, and they're all small, old facilities from the mid-1990s. The indoor snow centres of the Netherlands are largely impressive structures, and none more so than the world's largest (no, it's not ski Dubai...), SnowWorld at Landgraaf in the very south of the country.
